Connecting the Dots

Have you ever looked back at something you’re building and suddenly realized that all the little pieces have been leading you in the same direction?

That’s how I’ve been feeling about Studio Agnew lately.

Over the past few weeks, there have been a lot of different things happening. I celebrated the ribbon cutting with the Town of Howey-in-the-Hills, held another Fairy Door Workshop at Leu Gardens, and put the September calendar together. I’ve also continued meeting people who are looking for opportunities to gather, learn something new, and spend time being creative.

None of these things seem particularly connected at first. But when I step back, I can see the thread running through all of them.

It’s connection.

I’ve always loved quality time with friends and family. Some of my favorite moments have been the simple ones — sitting around a table, talking, sharing a meal, working on something together, or simply enjoying being in the same place. There’s something about having an experience together that creates space for conversation, connection, and memories.

That has always been important to me, and I think it’s one of the reasons I love teaching art. Yes, we’re there to learn a skill and create something, but there is also something happening around the table. People talk. They share ideas. They help each other. They laugh. They spend time doing something together.

The art gives us a reason to gather.

And that is becoming a bigger part of what I see Studio Agnew becoming.

A Place to Gather

The more people I meet through the studio, the more I hear a similar sentiment: people are looking for places to do things together.

They want to learn something new. They want to try an art form they haven’t explored before. They want to meet other people with similar interests. Sometimes they simply want a reason to get out of their normal routine and spend a few hours doing something creative.

That was especially noticeable during the Fairy Door Workshop at Leu Gardens.

Everyone started with the same basic idea, but each person created something completely different. As people worked, conversations started, ideas were shared, and everyone became invested in what they were making.

The finished fairy doors were wonderful, but the experience around the table was just as important.

The same thing happens in the studio.

That’s one of my favorite parts of teaching. I get to watch people begin with an idea — sometimes with a little hesitation — and then figure it out as they go. They learn a skill, experiment with materials, and often end up talking to someone they might never have met otherwise.

Art creates the reason to gather.

Making Room for Creativity

Organization has always been an important part of my foundation as an artist.

That might sound like an odd thing to connect with creativity. We often think of art as spontaneous, messy, and unpredictable. And it certainly can be.

But I’ve found that having some structure actually gives creativity more room to happen.

We are creatures of habits and routines. When we create space for something in our schedule, we are much more likely to actually do it.

As summer winds down, those routines start coming back. School begins, calendars fill up, and the pace of life starts to settle into something a little more predictable.

For me, that makes September feel like a natural time to get creative again.

Maybe you’ve been wanting to learn watercolor. Maybe you’ve been meaning to pick up drawing again. Maybe you want to try printmaking or simply spend a couple of hours making something with your hands.

Having a class on the calendar gives you a reason to show up.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

Connecting the Dots

When I look at everything happening around Studio Agnew, I can see how the pieces are beginning to fit together.

There is my love of art and teaching. There is my love of spending time with people. There is the importance I place on routine and making time for creative practice. There are the conversations I’ve had with people who want to learn, create, and try something new.

And now there is a physical place where those things can come together.

The September calendar is live, with classes and workshops offering different ways to explore art, learn new skills, and create alongside other people.

As summer comes to a close, it feels like a good time to make room for something new.

The funny thing about connecting the dots is that you rarely know what the picture will look like while you’re drawing it.

You just keep moving forward, following the things that matter to you, and adding one piece at a time.

A conversation leads to an idea.

An idea leads to a class.

A class leads to a new connection.

And eventually, you step back and realize there was a bigger picture taking shape all along.

That’s what I’m beginning to see with Studio Agnew.

I don’t know exactly what all of these dots will become yet.

But I’m enjoying seeing where they lead.
