Where the Tiger Goes Next

The new Tiger sticker will be available for purchase at Stick’NSlap and will then become part of the Studio Agnew merch line in Howey-in-the-Hills.

So this Tiger gets to travel a little.

It started as part of my Chinese Zodiac Icon Collection, got a new look for Into the Wild, became a sticker for an exhibition, and will eventually make its way onto the shelves at Studio Agnew.

Not a bad journey for a Tiger.

For the past two years, I’ve been a featured artist in Stick’NSlap, and both years I’ve taken one of the animals from my Chinese Zodiac Icon Collection and reimagined it to fit that year’s theme.

Last year, it was the Monkey, inspired by Project Ham—the first monkey sent into outer space. It gave me the opportunity to turn my simple Monkey icon into a fun, nostalgic, retro-inspired space sticker.

This year, the theme is Into the Wild.

Starting With a Simple Tiger

The original Tiger is part of my Chinese Zodiac Icon Collection, a series of graphic icons I created inspired by the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The icons themselves are intentionally very simple—black and white, graphic, and stripped down to the basic shapes and characteristics that make each animal recognizable.

That simplicity is actually what makes these projects so much fun. I get to take something that was designed to be simple and ask, “What can I do with this?”

Stick’NSlap has given me a fun reason to take one of these black-and-white icons and rethink how it could look within a completely different theme.

For this year’s Into the Wild theme, I kept the foundation of the original Tiger but started pushing the design in a new direction. More color, more details, and plenty of little things to discover. I wanted to keep the personality of the original while making it feel like it belonged in Into the Wild.

That’s one of my favorite things about being an artist and designer. You can take something you’ve already created and ask a completely different question of it:

What else could this become?

There’s also something fun about having a few creative constraints to work within. You have the animal, you have the theme, and you have the format. Now figure it out.

You’re not starting with a completely blank page, but you still have plenty of room to experiment. And because the original icons are so simple, there’s a lot of room to play. Color can change the entire personality of a design, and a few extra details can completely change the story.

From Illustration to Sticker

Once the artwork was finished, it was time to turn the Tiger into an actual sticker. And this is where another part of the story comes in.

I’ve been working with StickerPrintGo since my first Stick’NSlap show, and over the years I’ve gotten to know Anton and Chris—who I affectionately call the Sticker Men.

They’ve become more than just the people who print my stickers. They’re fellow small-business owners who I’m always happy to support, especially because they’ve also done a lot to support the Orlando creative scene in so many different ways.

So when I need stickers made, I’m happy to send the work their way. It’s one of those small-business relationships where we get to help each other out, which is something I really value.

And honestly, stickers are one of those things that make it easy to share art. Artists trade them, friends trade them, and you see a design you like and suddenly you have a little piece of someone’s artwork to put on your laptop, water bottle, sketchbook, or wherever you collect them.

There’s something pretty fitting about taking one of my illustrations, turning it into a sticker, and then sending it back out into the world.
