The Supplies I Teach With
Why Studio Agnew now carries art supplies — from a purple Caboodles case in the 90s to a beginner kit for an overwhelmed customer.

There's a new shelf at the studio stocked with art supplies — and the story behind it starts with a purple Caboodles case in the 90s.
I was inspired to set up an art supply section in my studio for convenience — for students, and for beginner artists who want to start but don't know what they need.
My oil painting teacher got me started — she had everything I needed, and my mom bought me my first paint and brush set for her classes. I still remember carrying it all to lessons after school on Monday nights in one of those 90s Caboodles cases. It was purple. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world: my art supplies in a container with a handle, and me a young girl off to paint on a canvas in a basement.
Years later I realized what she was doing is no different from what I'm starting to do in my own studio — educating not only on how to create art, but what you need to create with.
A customer came in not long ago and told me how overwhelmed he felt walking into the big box stores, not sure where to start. So I put together a beginner kit from supplies I already had on hand. He kept asking me, do I need this, do I need that? And I told him: to get started and see if you like painting, you don't need a ton of supplies. I'll tell you what you need.
He was so excited.
All of my classes include supplies, so I've thoughtfully curated everything I teach with — and now I can share it. If you're coming in to take a class and you've been meaning to get supplies but keep forgetting to go get some, that's why they're here. A simple, easy, convenient way to pick up art supplies and support an artist-run studio.
I know the difference between kids, student grade, and professional art supplies, and I sell what you need — and it's good quality.
On the shelves now: watercolor paper packs, watercolor greeting card blank sets, grab-and-go stretched canvases, lino blocks, and a 7-brush starter set I put together — good quality, student-or-better, with no filler brushes you won't touch to get started. You can always build on your brushes after. It even includes the 1" flat, my favorite. More will be trickling in from time to time.
Whether you're here for a class or just stopping by, they're available to pick up in the studio. And if you need framing, matting, or scanning, those live here too.
