What Is a Fine Art Class?

A fine art class teaches you how to create artwork through instruction, demonstrations, practice, and an understanding of artistic techniques. Depending on the class, you might learn to draw from observation, mix colors, work with different painting materials, or explore printmaking and other processes.

Unlike an activity focused solely on completing a project, fine art instruction emphasizes the skills and decisions behind the finished work. You learn how materials behave, why techniques work, and how to apply what you've learned to your own artwork.

At Studio Agnew in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, I teach fine art classes and workshops for children, teens, and adults, covering a variety of mediums, techniques, and experience levels.

Do You Need Previous Art Experience?

Absolutely not.

One of the most common things I hear is some version of "I can't draw" or "I'm not artistic." Sometimes people say it before they've even picked up a pencil. Others haven't taken an art class since childhood and aren't sure they remember anything they learned.

I understand why trying something new can feel intimidating. We tend to think of artistic ability as something you're either born with or you're not. But while people may have different interests and natural inclinations, artistic skills can be developed through instruction, observation, and practice.

You don't have to walk into a beginner art class knowing how to shade a sphere, mix the perfect color, or create a balanced composition. You can learn those things.

And drawing isn't the only way into art. Painting, printmaking, book arts, and experimental techniques all offer different ways to explore materials and develop your creative skills.

If you're curious about the possibilities, I recently explored five Studio Agnew fine art classes that have nothing to do with drawing. From cyanotypes to bookbinding, there are plenty of ways to get started.

No. Many classes are suitable for beginners, and you don't need to know how to draw to explore art.

Instruction may include demonstrations, step-by-step guidance, practice exercises, and individual feedback, depending on the class. You'll learn how to use the materials, develop techniques, and make decisions as you work.

Some classes focus on foundational skills, while others introduce a specific medium or process. Class descriptions outline the intended age group, subject, and any experience requirements so you can choose the right fit.

What Can You Learn at Studio Agnew?

Studio Agnew offers classes and workshops across a range of artistic mediums. Each provides a different way to develop skills and explore the creative process.

Drawing: Learn observation, shape, proportion, shading, value, and composition using materials such as graphite and oil pastels.

Painting: Explore color, brushwork, layering, and composition through mediums such as watercolor and acrylic paint.

Mixed Media: Combine materials and techniques to explore texture, color, layering, and different approaches to building an image.

Printmaking: Discover processes such as linocut, where you carve a design into a printing block, apply ink, and transfer the image onto paper.

Book Arts and Bookbinding: Learn how paper, structure, and design come together to create handmade books and sketchbooks.

Experimental Art Processes: Try techniques such as cyanotype, which uses light-sensitive materials to create images, or Suminagashi, the Japanese art of marbling ink on water and transferring patterns onto paper.

Other workshops may explore nature-inspired materials and specialized techniques. Offerings vary throughout the year, so check the Studio Schedule for current classes and workshops.

What Happens During a Class?

The format depends on the medium and learning goals, but a class may include:

  • Introduction and demonstration: Learn about the materials, techniques, and process.

  • Guided practice: Follow demonstrations and try the techniques yourself.

  • Instruction and feedback: Receive guidance as you work through challenges and develop your skills.

  • Creating artwork: Apply what you've learned to a finished piece or a series of exercises.

Some workshops focus on completing a particular piece, while ongoing classes may place greater emphasis on developing skills over time. In either case, the goal is to provide instruction that helps you understand the process—not simply hand you supplies and leave you to figure everything out.

How Do You Choose the Right Class?

Start with what you want to learn.

  • Interested in foundational skills? Explore drawing or painting.

  • Want to try a new material? Look for watercolor, mixed media, or an experimental art workshop.

  • Interested in making prints or books? Consider printmaking or book arts.

  • Looking for classes for your child or teen? Explore age-appropriate programs designed around their interests and experience.

  • Prefer a class for your own group? Studio Agnew also offers private group workshops and off-site art experiences by arrangement.

You don't have to know which medium you'll enjoy most before you begin. A single workshop can be a useful way to explore something new.
