Tiny Doors, Big Imaginations: Why Fairy Doors Capture Our Hearts

A Tiny Door to a Bigger World

Even as a child, after watching Peter Pan, I wondered how Tinker Bell lived and what her tiny home looked like. I imagined the little details—the places fairies would gather, the treasures they would collect, and the magical worlds that existed just beyond what we could see.

Stories like Peter Pan and Thumbelina introduced us to the idea that an entire world could exist in the smallest spaces. A flower could become a home. A garden could become an adventure. A tiny doorway could lead somewhere extraordinary.

Maybe that's why fairy doors continue to capture our imagination today.

They bring us back to that same sense of wonder we had as children—the feeling that magic might be hiding just around the corner if we slow down enough to look for it.

Fairy doors invite us to imagine the stories behind them. Every person sees something different. Every fairy door becomes a reflection of the imagination behind it.

Fairy doors capture our imagination because they bring together three things we naturally connect with: storytelling, nature, and creativity.

Finding Magic in Nature

One of the things I love most about fairy door workshops is watching ordinary materials become something extraordinary.

Twigs become door frames.

Moss transforms into cozy rooftops.

Pebbles become winding pathways.

Weathered bark becomes tiny front porches.

Acorns, seed pods, pinecones, feathers, and other fallen treasures become whimsical decorations full of character.

Materials we might normally overlook suddenly become building blocks for a magical story.

It's a wonderful reminder that creativity doesn't always begin with expensive art supplies. More often, it begins with curiosity—with looking at something ordinary and asking:

"What could this become?"

Creating Fairy Doors at Leu Gardens

Recently, I had the joy of teaching a Whimsical Fairy Door Workshop at Leu Gardens as part of their Fairy Door Exhibit.

When I was invited to create a workshop experience to accompany the exhibit, I wanted to design something that captured the same sense of wonder, imagination, and discovery found throughout the Gardens. The idea was to give visitors the opportunity to not only explore the fairy doors on display, but to create a magical doorway of their own.

The workshop quickly filled, and I loved seeing participants step into their creativity.

Although everyone began with similar natural materials, no two fairy doors looked alike.

Friends shared ideas across the table. Mothers and daughters laughed as they created together. Couples enjoyed an afternoon making something side by side. Every participant brought their own imagination to the project, and every finished fairy door reflected its maker's personality.

That's one of my favorite things about teaching art. The goal isn't for everyone to create the same project. The goal is to give people the confidence to explore their own creativity.

After the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore the Fairy Door Exhibit throughout the Gardens with their workshop ticket, discovering hidden fairy homes and imagining the stories behind each tiny doorway.

Discover the Fairy Door Exhibit at Leu Gardens

The magic doesn't stop when the workshop ends.

The Fairy Door Exhibit at Leu Gardens invites visitors to step into a world of imagination as they explore the gardens and search for 20 handmade fairy doors hidden throughout the landscape.

Each door has its own personality, story, and fairy waiting to be discovered. As you wander the gardens, you'll find yourself looking a little closer—beneath trees, along pathways, and tucked into unexpected places—to discover where each fairy lives.

What makes the exhibit so special is the way it transforms a simple garden walk into an adventure. A visit becomes more than just a stroll through beautiful gardens—it becomes a chance to slow down, explore, and experience a little wonder.

The Fairy Door Exhibit is open at Leu Gardens through September 7, giving visitors plenty of time to discover these tiny magical worlds tucked throughout the Gardens. September 7 is also a free day at Leu Gardens, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Gardens at no cost all day long.

What a wonderful way to celebrate 65 years of Leu Gardens — by inviting the community to slow down, explore, and discover a little extra magic hidden among the paths and gardens.

Create Your Own Fairy Door

Your workshop registration includes admission to Leu Gardens, giving you time to explore the Fairy Door Exhibit before or after class and discover the enchanting fairy doors hidden throughout the gardens.

During the workshop, you'll create your own whimsical fairy door using natural and mixed-media materials, including sticks, moss, stones, wood textures, and decorative details.

The excitement and creativity from this workshop have inspired me to bring the fairy door experience to Studio Agnew this fall. I’ll be hosting a special Fairy Door Workshop Day on Saturday, September 12, with two sessions available so more people can create their own tiny magical worlds.

A Little Wonder Goes a Long Way

In a world that often moves too fast, perhaps that's the true magic of fairy doors.

They remind us to slow down, look closer, and imagine what could be.

Creativity doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it begins with a tiny door, a handful of twigs, and the willingness to believe there is still a little magic waiting to be discovered.
