The Sketchbook Stories

Reflections on creativity, curiosity, the artist’s journey, and the sketchbook.

Why Artists Should Always Stay Emerging

Being an emerging artist isn’t just a stage—it’s a mindset. Even after 30+ years of creating, I still embrace the curiosity, freedom, and joy that come with staying “emerging.” Here’s why holding onto that spirit can keep your art—and your creativity—alive forever.

In the art world, the term emerging artist usually describes someone at the beginning of their career—an artist still building recognition, growing an audience, and exploring their creative path. It’s often seen as a stage to move through, a temporary title before reaching “established” status.

But what if being emerging is actually the best place to stay?

I’ve been creating and expressing myself through art for over 30 years, and I still consider myself emerging. For me, it’s a way to remain free within my own imagination and creativity. My art is an extension of my feelings, thoughts, passions, and the way I see and interpret life. And the truth is—I’m not done, and I never will be. I still have endless ideas waiting to be made. To me, the only “established” part of being an artist is simply being brave enough to claim the title artist. That mindset has shaped my journey, fueled my growth, and ultimately inspired me to start Studio Agnew.

Here are five reasons why you should always carry the spirit of an emerging artist:

1. Curiosity Never Retires

An emerging artist is curious. They ask questions, explore possibilities, and aren’t afraid to experiment. Staying “emerging” means staying open to discovery, never letting creativity grow stale.

2. Freedom to Evolve

Once artists are known for a certain style, there can be pressure to keep repeating it. Emerging artists, however, are free to reinvent themselves. That freedom to evolve keeps art alive, authentic, and deeply personal.

3. The Joy of Becoming

There’s a special energy in the “becoming” stage. Every step forward feels like new ground. Choosing to stay emerging means embracing the excitement of growth, rather than chasing the idea of arriving.

4. Resilience and Renewal

The art world changes constantly—new mediums, new technologies, new audiences. Emerging artists adapt quickly. By holding onto that mindset, artists can thrive in any era.

5. Innovation Through Play

Emerging artists are brave enough to take risks, test new ideas, and break molds. That spirit of play and innovation is where true breakthroughs happen.

A Forever-Emerging Mindset

To call yourself “emerging” isn’t about being unfinished—it’s about being unafraid of change.
It’s about embracing curiosity, reinvention, and the joy of discovery at every stage of your creative life. Because in the end, the artist who keeps emerging is the artist who never stops creating.
