Have you ever imagined what it’s like inside your own mind?
When I was just 12 years old, I created a story about a girl named Star—and in doing so, I unlocked the power of my imagination. Star’s world was filled with color and creativity, with magical places like rainbow baseball fields, underwater castles, and planets where aliens played basketball. But her journey wasn’t only about fun and wonder—Star also faced sadness, fear, and anger, and learned how to work through those emotions along the way.
The backgrounds in the original story were inspired by abstract art I painted in a summer art class. Each splash of paint represented a feeling, a moment, or a part of Star’s world—bringing imagination to life in ways I never expected. It was the first time I ever created something where art and writing came together.
A Note from the Author (1999)
"The story I wrote was hard for me because I’m not such a good writer, but I have a very good imagination. My favorite page is the thunder and lightning with the broken bridge. To make the background, I used different colored paints and put salt on the paper. I hope you enjoy reading my story." —Lindsay Agnew, Age 12

Looking Back
Reading this note now reminds me how important writing and reading are for kids—something I didn’t fully understand until later in life.
As a child, I didn’t always look forward to reading. I wanted to make art, play outside, or invent adventures with my toys. When I sat with picture books, I often skipped the words and instead imagined my own stories from the illustrations. What my mom and teachers might not have realized was that—even when I was playing with my Barbies or other toys—I was narrating stories aloud, creating elaborate scenes in my head for hours. Looking back, I can see that was the beginning of my love for storytelling. I just hadn’t yet connected it to writing.
I know there are many kids like that today—children who learn best by doing, creating, and imagining. That’s why, when I revisited Star’s Imagination, I wanted it to be more than just a story. I wanted it to be a tool for parents and children to read, learn, and explore creativity together.
At the time, I had no idea that one experimental art project would become something lasting. But thanks to my mom saving the book all these years, that class planted the seed for what is now my second children’s book: Star’s Imagination: A Creative Journey of Art and Stories.
For parents, the message is simple: play is learning, and creativity is a language of its own. When children invent stories through play—whether with dolls, toys, or art—they’re building imagination, problem-solving skills, and emotional understanding. Star’s Imagination takes that natural creativity and gives it a space to grow, helping kids connect storytelling with hands-on art, self-expression, and joyful exploration.
